The Definitive Rug Sizing Guide

Size is the most common mistake in rug selection. A rug that's too small can make even the finest piece look like an afterthought.

Living Rooms

All furniture on the rug creates cohesion. At minimum, front legs of seating should rest on the rug. Leave 18-24 inches of exposed floor around the perimeter.

Dining Rooms

The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides, allowing chairs to remain on the rug when pulled out.

Bedrooms

Position the rug to extend 18-24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed, creating a soft landing zone.

Runners

Leave 4-6 inches of floor exposed on each side. Length should allow 6 inches of clearance from door swings.
